Several of our members have studied local government commissions in our six beach cities governments: El Segundo, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach. Who appoints people to those commisions? Why are these positions non-elected? What do local commissions do, anyway? Our member's findings will be presented, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers!

Over 51% of non-voters are angry and disgusted with politicians and the political process, according to a poll by the Harvard University/ Washington Post Vanishing Voter Project. Over 70% of non-voters are actually registered to vote, but opt out. What can we do? What should we do? Let's talk about solutions to the problem. Join keynote speaker Dr. R. Michael Alvarez (of the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project) and a distinguished four-person panel to discuss these issues. You may download a registration form from the LWVC's members only web site at http://www.ca.lwv.org/lwvonly/conv_council/2005/ . A pre-convention event + a Smart Voter Workshop (free) on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Following the workshop, there will be a dinner (not free + see the registration info on the website above) at the Bellagio Restaurant. As parking will be difficult, we encourage you to use the shuttle buses that will be carrying people from the Northrop Grumman parking lot at One Space Park Blvd at Aviation (one block north of Manhattan Beach Blvd) and back. The buses will run every 15 minutes, from 1 pm to 5:30 pm. (More info at http://sb350.pbworks.com/Transportation .) The buses will drop you off on Manhattan Avenue and 10th Street.
